5 Important Body Care Habits You Need to Incorporate in Your Daily Rituals

Your body is your temple

Since we are born with the one skin we are in, we best be showing it some love. Our skin is the body's largest organ, which many of you may already know means it's important to take care of. It has the big job of protecting us from microbes and the elements as well as regulating your body temperature and allowing us to be able to feel hot, cold and sensations of touch. With our skin providing us with such an important barrier to the environment it's extremely important that we care for it because without it life on Earth would be impossible. So as you can see our skin is a big deal....literally!

The question is why is it that so many of us only start paying attention to our skin once there is a problem or abnormality? Common skin concerns such as dryness, sensitivity, oiliness, congestion, sun damage, wrinkles and signs of aging are all things we can alleviate or make better with basic care and regular maintenance.

So let's dive right in and talk about some easy steps to incorporate into your daily routine.


Step 1 - Sunscreen

I'm sure you have all heard how important it is to use sunscreen not just in the Summertime while protecting yourself in the hot sun but all year long!! Those harmful rays don't just happen during the warm months we all love so muc.

As The Skin Cancer Foundation quotes “Men, women and children over 6 months of age should use sunscreen every day. This includes people who tan easily and those who don’t — remember, your skin is damaged by sun exposure over your lifetime, whether or not you burn”

Proper reapplication is key, no matter what level SPF re-apply every 2 hours and immediately after swimming or sweating. If you're going to be going outside in short intervals an SPF 15 will suffice otherwise if you're going to be spending a lot of time in the sun they suggest a waterproof SPF 30 sunscreen. Our fav sunscreen is by Unika Cosmetics, it has an SPF 30, is made in Canada and as an added bonus is Reef Safe.


Step 2 - Exfoliate

Next, my favorite skin and bodycare step to keep my skin luminous and glowing. Every 21 to 28 days our skin naturally renews itself, however once we reach about 30 this process slows down and can result in an allover dull complexion. Exfoliating not only helps with the cellular turnover but it also ensures smooth radiant skin that keeps us looking altogether youthful.

How often should you exfoliate? Manual and Chemical exfoliants should only be used about once or twice a week. Be gentle on your face, scrubbing too often or too rough can do more harm than good. One last tip, when it comes to the face choose wisely. Some exfoliants have rough edges eg: almond shells which can be damaging to the skin so search for an exfoliant with round smooth edges instead like Seaflora’s Potent Sea Kelp Exfoliator. Not only is it certified Organic but they use hand harvested Ocean mud as an exfoliant.


Step 3 - Wash

Did you know that washing with traditional bar soap can strip the oil from your skin messing with your natural PH? It’s important to do your research and check ingredients.

We prefer the natural side of things ourselves. Hot long showers are also not
recommended because they can dry out and irritate the skin as well as disrupting the natural balance of moisture.

Board-certified New York City dermatologist Shari Marchbein states "[It] strips the skin of sebum, the healthy fats and oils necessary for skin health, and dehydrates the skin."

If keeping your skin happy and healthy is top priority then lukewarm showers are the way to go. Adding a little extra for your skin barrier can be done by using a gentle cleanser that doesn't have stripping soap in its ingredients like Seaflora’s Detoxifying Fucus body wash. A perfect addition to your daily shower routine.

Step 4 - Body Oils

These are a beautiful addition to any body care routine. Becoming extremely popular, body oils penetrate your skin’s protective barrier and help maintain a radiant glow throughout the day. To maximise the amount of moisture your skin retains, remember to cleanse and exfoliate your skin before you apply body oil. Also I would recommend waiting a few minutes before dressing to let the body oil soak in and your clothes stay grease free.

Step 5 - Hydrate

If you're not quite ready to take the leap and try body oils that's ok, just make sure you finish your body care routine with some hydration for your skin. By moisturizing you are helping to maintain your skin's protective barrier and keeping it properly hydrated which in
turn keeps your skin looking its best.

"Your skin absolutely needs moisturizer," says Mona Gohara, a dermatologist at Yale University, "Moisturizer doesn't just add water back into your skin, it also traps in the water you already have to plump it up and protect it."

So there you have it, spoil your skin because you'll wear it everyday for the rest of your life and remember we only wear SPF on days ending in y.
